How the projection is worked out.
The methodEach month, the calculator takes away the share of subscribers who cancel, then adds your new subscribers. It repeats that 12 times. The what-if line does the same sum with your what-if numbers, so you can see what a change in traffic or retention would add up to over a year.
A worked example
Start with 100 subscribers, gain 30 a month and lose 8% a month. After month one you have 122. Keep that pace for a year and you end on 273. Churn is why growth slows: the bigger the page, the more people leave each month, until new subscribers only just cover the ones you lose.
Why cancellations matter as much as new fans
Try it. In the example above, cutting cancellations from 8% to 5% ends the year on 330 subscribers. Getting 25% more new subscribers instead ends it on 333. Keeping fans is worth about as much as finding new ones, and it usually costs less.
